Rainy season aside, the Kakusenkei Gorge is worth visiting at any time of year. It’s particularly spectacular when the autumnal colours set the valley ablaze, but come snowbound winter it’s equally photogenic. Access to the gentle hike is via two very different bridges – a metal, modern magenta crossing known as the Ayatori Bridge (Cat’s Cradle) and the more traditional Kurotani Bridge. Whichever way you go along this 1.3km trek, don’t forget to take in the waterfalls.
